Who I Work With

I work with students ages 6 to 17, from beginners starting their musical journey to those pursuing more advanced and pre-conservatory level study study. Some students play for the love of music, while others also choose to work toward exams, festivals, or auditions – no matter what, each student is guided in building the skills and confidence to grow as a musician.

For younger students, parent involvement is encouraged to help support practice at home. Children under 6 may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

“Carmen is a loving, nurturing teacher who can motivate students with her passion and patience. She has a way with children that nourishes their love and appreciation of music and theory. She talks with students, at their level. Her stickers are the best.”

What Students Learn

Lessons are engaging, supportive, and thoughtfully paced – helping students build their own toolbox of skills, including:

  • Healthy violin technique – playing with ease and control, including tone production (sound quality), intonation (tuning), and expressive playing

  • Repertoire – primarily Western classical music, with options to explore other styles

  • Technical skills – scales, arpeggios, and studies designed to build strong playing habits

  • Musicianship – reading music, active listening, rhythmic pulse, playing by ear

  • Practice skills – building effective, age-appropriate habits such as goal setting and problem-solving

  • Performance skills – preparing music and performing with confidence.

“She is exceptional at soliciting student feedback throughout the lesson and encouraging student responsibility and ownership.”

My Approach

I meet each student where they are, helping them navigate technical and musical challenges in a clear, manageable way, while building confidence, enjoyment, and the tools to express themselves and bring the music they imagine to life.

Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals and needs, combining a strong understanding of the individual with a thoughtful structured approach to learning the violin.

My students often hear me say, ‘Mistakes are okay they’re part of learning.’ I want students to feel safe exploring and trying new things, knowing that mistakes are a natural part of the process.

I build on strengths while addressing challenges, guiding students toward effective solutions that support steady progress and the growth of their musical voice.

My teaching draws from the Royal Conservatory of Music, Conservatory Canada, and the American String Teachers Association curricula, along with a variety of materials from different styles.

“It might be possible for many instructors to spot the weaknesses of a performer; however, Carmen's capability to point to the root cause and propose an exercise to address the weakness is what makes her an excellent mentor.”

How Lessons are Structured

All lessons are taught privately in a 1:1 setting on a weekly ongoing basis. In-person lessons take place at my Leaside studio, with virtual lessons available worldwide.

Studio Performance Opportunities

Studio recitals are held twice per year and offer a uniquely curated performance experience beyond the traditional format, including bespoke programs, live piano accompaniment, and group performances.

Students perform in a polished yet welcoming atmosphere that builds confidence and celebrates progress, followed by a reception that encourages connection within the studio community. Participation is highly encouraged.

“When Lauryn started lessons, I would never have guessed that she would voluntarily participate in as many performance opportunities as she already has.”

Exams, Festivals, and Auditions

My teaching is built on a strong, well-rounded foundation in technique, musicianship, and artistry. This foundation naturally prepares interested students for:

  • Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) examinations, as well as

  • Festivals and competitions (such as Kiwanis)

  • Auditions for youth orchestras, arts programs, high schools, and university study

Students taking part often achieve strong results and placements.

Ensemble Experience

Students are encouraged to participate in ensembles outside of their private lessons such as youth orchestras, school music programs (band, orchestra, choir), drumline, chamber groups, or community music groups.

Playing with others is one of the most rewarding aspects of learning music. It enhances what’s learned in lessons, and gives fantastic opportunities for growth, peer connection, and inspiration.

“Under Carmen’s expert instruction, Kyle has progressed from a novice to becoming a valuable member of his high school orchestra. In spring 2024, he had the honor of performing with his orchestra at the esteemed Berliner Philharmoniker in Germany.”
